About these numbers

  • Sources: Southwest Florida Water Management District (38,729 records); St. Johns River Water Management District (40 records). Records were fetched October 25, 2026.
  • What’s counted: wells with a reported depth whose use is household, irrigation, public supply or agricultural. Monitoring wells, injection wells, plugged wells and permits that were never drilled are left out. Methodology.
  • Dates: SWFWMD permits issued 1970–2026. The SJRWMD layers carry no date.
  • Approximate locations: 22,565 of 38,769 records (58%) share their exact map point with at least four other records, so they’re probably placed at a section, subdivision or parcel-group center rather than at the well. That matters for “nearest well” distances, less for area figures like these.
  • Not a guarantee: a record shows how deep one well was permitted or built. It doesn’t predict yield, water quality or what your well will need.

Questions

How deep are wells in Citrus County?
Household (domestic) wells in Citrus County have a median reported depth of 100 ft. The middle half are between 68 ft and 155 ft, based on 33,038 SWFWMD and SJRWMD records.
Will a new well at my property in Citrus County be this deep?
Not necessarily. These are depths other wells were permitted or built to. Depth depends on the aquifer, water quality, use and local rules. A Florida-licensed water well contractor and your water management district can tell you what a new well at your property needs.
Where does this data come from?
From public well-construction records published by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and St. Johns River Water Management District. Each well in the lookup links to its original agency record.
